What is an Original Elefant Grating?

Elefant grating is a specialised mesh grating designed to endure heavy loads in industrial and architectural applications. Its durability and strength make it ideal for scenarios where standard gratings are insufficient.

Different types of elefant gratings are available to meet various needs.

  • Gratings with legs: These come with robust support legs, enhancing strength and stability under significant loads, a critical feature in safety-conscious industrial settings.

  • Gratings with frames: Reinforced with a solid frame, this type improves structural integrity and ensures the grating maintains its shape even in demanding applications.

For projects requiring bespoke solutions, PcP offers alternatives such as CUBE® stair treads in steel and stainless steel. These integrate seamlessly into staircases, combining safety and functionality to handle daily traffic in industrial environments.

Characteristics of ELEFANT gratings and mesh gratings by PcP

PcP’s galvanised elefant gratings from the ELEFANT® series feature load bars aligned with the span direction and cross bars positioned perpendicular to the load bars. The cross bars, which are lower in height than the load bars, are pressed into specially shaped grooves in the load bars under high pressure.

This process securely binds the components into a single, robust grating, which is why elefant gratings are often referred to as mesh gratings. For added stability and as a finishing touch, the gratings are framed with edging bars on all four sides. At the corners, the edging bars are welded together to further stabilise the grating. Additionally, an appropriate number of bars are welded to the edging bars to ensure the grating's durability.

How to determine elefant grating dimensions

The length of an elefant grating corresponds to the span direction:          L = Length of grating in bearing direction (total span direction)

W = Width of grating

SPAN

Span is the distance between supports.

EXAMPLE

A grating measuring 1000 x 1500 mm has 1000 mm in the span direction and 1500 mm in width.

CONVERSELY

A grating measuring 1500 x 1000 mm has 1500 mm as its span length and 1000 mm as its width.

Examples of mesh sizes – endless combinations

Mesh sizes are described by the distance between load bars (Ma) and cross bars (Mc) and are denoted as Ma/Mc. To avoid misunderstandings, abbreviations are used in descriptions.

Bruun EN 1090 2 (1)

Tolerances for elefant gratings

Our gratings meet manufacturing tolerance requirements specified in DS/EN 1090-2, including:

  • Load bars: Up to 60 x 5 mm

  • Mesh sizes: Maximum 66 mm, minimum 11 mm

  • Maximum grating size: 2.0 m² with one dimension not exceeding 2000 mm

Mesh Grating Diagonal Measurement (1)

Diagonal measurements (cross measurements)

The difference between D1 and D2 must not exceed:
± D1 - D2 = 0.012 x Largest Side Dimension

Where:

D1: Diagonal measurement 1

D2: Diagonal measurement 2

Largest Side Dimension

Mesh Grating Curved Measurement

Bow measurements, width & length

For L/W > 450 mm: 1/150 x L/W, but maximum 8.0 mm

For L/W ≤ 450 mm: Maximum 3.0 mm

For L/W > 600 mm: 1/200 x L/W, but maximum 8.0 mm

For L/W ≤ 600 mm: Maximum 3.0 mm

Mesh Grating Cutouts Measurement

Side, cut-out, and mesh measurements

L & W: +0 / -4 mm

d: ± 1.5 mm

d10: ± 4.0 mm (across 10 meshes)

f, e, g, Ø: +8 / -0 mm

Serrated mesh gratings – increase slip resistance

We offer serration on load bars, cross bars, or both for enhanced slip resistance.

Project planning – grating decks

PcP divides grating decks into standardised sizes to streamline production and ensure uniformity. Gratings require a 30 mm minimum support surface, fully supported at both ends in the load direction. 2 mm clearance between gratings accounts for construction tolerances.
